László Moholy-Nagy's Composition dates from 1939, the same year Hilla Rebay opened the Museum of Non-Objective Painting in New York. Rebay and Solomon R. Guggenheim had collected Moholy-Nagy's work since 1929, recognizing in his investigations of light, movement, and spatial relationships ideas closely aligned with their conception of non-objective art. Moholy-Nagy was represented in Art of Tomorrow, the museum's inaugural exhibition in June 1939. In this drawing, intersecting lines and overlapping forms create a sense of transparency and movement that anticipates the spatial investigations that would increasingly occupy the artist during his Chicago years.
