ARTnews, Apr 29, 2015

San Francisco’s Weinstein Gallery will host a large survey for Surrealist artist Kurt Seligmann, his first in America in 55 years. The show, titled “Kurt Seligmann: First Message from the Spirit world of the Object,” will run from May 9 until June 13, and will include the artist’s famous 6-foot-tall 1959 triptych composed of paintings Effervescent (Corn Spirit)Envelopment (Mountain Spirit), and The Gathering (Sphinx and Minotaur), among 50 other paintings and etchings. The exhibition will be the first time the three works have been united as intended since a 1960 exhibition at Fine Arts Associate; in fact, The Gathering was thought to be lost for many years.

The gallery is also planning a Seligmann symposium for May 9 at 4 p.m., in which a webcast roundtable discussion and a book release (the first Seligmann scholarship to be published in English) will take place. The exhibition opening will follow at 6 p.m.
